about the course structure

M.Sc. Digital Business Engineering - your Degree Program for the next step in your Career!

The degree program combines modern computer science with business and teaches you all the skills you need to develop innovative digital business models and products. During the course, we cover important topics in areas such as service engineering, software management, digital business, artificial intelligence, cloud computing and much more.

The course directly combines teaching and practice by focusing lectures on modern technologies and industry issues. You can also take part in a one-year practical project in the first semester, in which you work on current industry topics together with other students and your professors. This can involve developing digital business models and strategies, for example, or apps or web applications for the cloud - you can choose from several projects and tailor your studies to your wishes!

In addition to these basic building blocks for a successful career in digital business, you can also focus on your strengths and favorite topics during your studies. By combining elective Courses, you can for example specialize in strategic areas such as service engineering or software architecture, or more technical topics such as the Internet of Things, cloud-based web development, or artificial intelligence.

The M.Sc. Digital Business Engineering degree program

The degree program teaches in-depth computer science skills in innovative core topics of business informatics. The focus is on engineering methods for the design of software-intensive products combined with the formal know-how of analysis and modeling for complex IT systems and IT-based value-creation processes. Added to this is the technical and strategic know-how for the comprehensive and pervasive computerization of companies. Accordingly, topics like service engineering, business process modeling, and distributed systems are discussed in the course. In addition, the integration of new computer science approaches into business-relevant strategies is also covered in this degree. This includes cutting-edge computer science topics from the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and machine learning, cloud computing, and entrepreneurship methods for software products. Finally, it is also about the implementation of corresponding approaches in IT and consulting projects.

The course content of the Master's degree program in Digital Business Engineering is designed to be innovative and interdisciplinary, with a practical focus.  The course content is developed and continuously adapted together with our practice partners.

In the first semester, you will acquire important mathematical foundations in relation to distributed systems and deal with the basics of intra- and entrepreneurship and the individual phases of innovation and start-up processes, among other things. You will acquire knowledge of the key areas of digitalization and holistic software management for companies. In the first practical project, you will deepen the knowledge and skills acquired in your Bachelor's degree.

In the second semester, you will choose your first elective subject and apply the knowledge you have acquired in your second practical project. You will also learn how to apply process and modeling languages (especially BPEL and BPMN) in practice and how to methodically develop, economically evaluate and improve services. You will also acquire basic skills in the field of artificial intelligence.

You will also improve your English skills, as some modules are taught in English.

The third semester consists of your second elective subject and the preparation of your Master's thesis.

Special features

The degree program is a full-time program, but can be designed flexibly thanks to its block orientation. This means that it can also be easily combined with a career.

Compatible with workThe M.Sc. Digital Business Engineering can be studied as a normal degree course, but is also particularly compatible with a career, as the modules are organized as full-day block courses. All lecture days for all modules are already known at the start of the semester so that you can plan optimally. In addition, all compulsory modules are offered every semester, allowing you to put together your own individual study plan for each semester. This flexibility is used by many students at the HHZ to combine working student activities, part-time jobs or even full-time employment with their studies. To help you design your optimal study plan, we have designed so-called “tracks” that suggest a grouping of modules, for example to complete all modules in a few weeks or to attend regular events per week.

Our DBE tracks show you typical curriculum sequences, i.e. how our students choose their modules in order to reconcile different life situations with their studies. All modules are offered as full-day block courses.

Professional Track: The block courses for all modules are grouped into a few weeks over the semester. You take the modules on a weekly basis. Two electives are embedded in this mode. We recommend this track for working students.

Flexible track: If you want to study semester by semester, you attend the lectures of the first semester and those of the second semester in the following semester. Those who can only study on certain days: Lectures of the first semester are mainly Mon, Tue, Wed (i.e. first half of the week) and those of the second semester are mainly Thurs and Fri. As all lectures are offered every semester, you can also choose flexibly. We recommend this track for students who want to be very flexible.

Fast Track: The compulsory modules are planned without overlaps. This means you can complete almost all modules in just a few months. This is very intensive. We only recommend this track for students who are studying full-time without a job or other part-time activity. Fast Track students are also often interested in pursuing a doctorate on the academic career path.
